BYP is a youth centre for all young people aged 9 – 19 who live in and around Ashburton.
Tuesdays for ages 11 +
Wednesdays for ages 9 – 11
Thursdays for ages 11 +
Fridays for ages 11 +
Our objective is to engage young people in purposeful activity in a space they can call their own, where they can relax, be creative, have fun, make friends, develop their interests and skills, talk and discuss, increase self awareness, take on responsibility, seek advice and support, increase their understanding of the community around them and their involvement in it.
The youth club programme has varied activities including healthy eating, cooking and safety in the kitchen sessions, debates and discussions, computer skills training, team sports, games, quizzes, arts and crafts activities, multi cultural music evenings and outdoor activities such as rock climbing, walking and canoeing and occasional trips to local and regional attractions including theatres, cinemas and adventure facilities.
In addition there is a confidential information, advice and support service for young people and the involvement of senior members in the running of BYP, some undertaking leadership training to assist with the weekly junior club night.
There are six trustees and a representative from the Town Council who form a management group, which meets on the second Monday of each month.
The management group employs 5 part-time youth support workers, Julien is the lead youth support worker, Tonia, Zak and Dan are the assistant youth support workers. Together they form the Youth Work Team. Members of that team organise and manage each of the four sessions.
